Above & Below The Line
If you have attended any of our workshops you will recall us introducing the concept of above or below the line.
Accountability
Ownership
Responsibility
--------------------------------
Blame
Excuse
Deny
Below the line are all aspects of denial. When we indulge in any of these behaviours we are refusing to accept reality. This is a totally powerless position, if something is someone else's fault only they can fix it.
If on the other hand you move above the line, then you move into the area of responsibility. This is where the power lies. When you take ownership, become accountable and accept responsibility you are in a position to take action to change things, remedy mistakes and move your life in the direction you desire.
Denial
We use many techniques to assist us in denying reality. Some are quite blatant like drugs and alcohol, while others are more subtle. Maybe we say to ourselves, "I've healed that", is this real (or even possible) or is it an excuse not to feel it any more. If I have "healed" it, it can no longer be part of me. However our life experience will always be part of us. What we can change is how we react.
But, and this is critically important we can only change that for which we take responsibility.
100% responsibility
So we move above the line and take 100% responsibility for our life.
This is a great empowered position, but beware there is a trap. How do we know for a fact what is ours to take responsibility for and what is someone else's?
There is no easy answer but the clues are generally in how your life is working, or not working as the case may be. When you either deny responsibility that is yours, or take responsibility for what is not yours, your life does not flow smoothly. Taking responsibility for that which is not yours is below the line behaviour, you are denying reality.
Awareness
Awareness is the key. Having the self knowledge to know where you are reacting from gives you the power to live your life as you desire.
When you are reacting from a young hurt place you are not coming from your heart. To come from your heart you need to authentically act as a mature, aware adult. The mature adult always acts above the line because the adult part of us knows that there is no power in blame excuses or denial.
Stay above the line and your life will start working as you want it to.
